MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team tied the match at 1-1 with a singles win at No. 2, but No. 2 Georgia won the next three matches off court in a 4-1 Bulldog win in quarterfinal action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 6) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Michigan fell behind early, dropping the doubles point with Georgia taking wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Freshman Brienne Minor kept her record perfect in dual matches, defeating No. 22 Caroline Brinson in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) at No. 2 to tie the match at 1-1.
The Bulldogs quickly got the point back a few minutes later, winning at No. 4. Georgia increased its lead to 3-1 with a victory at No. 5, with senior Ronit Yurovsky earning the split at No. 1 to stay on court for a third set.
Michigan could not turn the match at No. 3 as Kennedy Shaffer knocked off freshman Kate Fahey, 6-4, in the second set to seal the team match.
U-M will play one more match at the tournament tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 7) in consolation action, facing No. 18 LSU at 3:30 p.m. CST.
