ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Kate Fahey won a straight-set match against 58th-ranked Jessie Aney to give the eight-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team a 5-2 victory over second-ranked North Carolina on Saturday (Feb. 20) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Fahey rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the first set and held on after posting a 5-2 lead in the second set to secure the 6-4, 6-4 victory.
In a battle of top-10 teams nationally, the Wolverines won four of the six singles matches with the Tarheels (10-2) after winning the doubles point to pull the upset.
The 26th-ranked duo of sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Brienne Minor posted a big victory to get things started for the Wolverines, defeating the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the country, Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay, by a 6-4 score at the top spot.
The Wolverines grabbed the doubles point with a victory by junior Sara Remynse and freshman Teona Velehorschi in a tie-breaker at No. 3. The duo outlasted Ashley Dai and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer by winning the tie-breaker 7-4 for a 7-6 victory in the matchup. The competition at No. 2 was abandoned with North Carolina holding a 6-5 advantage, but Michigan had a 40-15 lead on the Tar Heels' serve.
In singles, UNC won the matches at No. 1 and No. 2 in straight sets as U-M posted straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 and a three-set win at No. 4. Sophomore Alex Najarian defeated Marika Akkerman at No. 5 (6-3, 6-4) for the Wolverines' first singles point, and Remynse defeated Chloe Ouellet-Pizer at No. 6 (6-4, 6-4) to set up the deciding match for the Wolverines.
After Fahey secured the team victory, Ruder-Hook finished off the team's impressive day with a come-from-behind win at No. 4. Ruder-Hook rallied after dropping the opening set to post a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Katie Vialle.
Michigan will take a short break before getting back into action during its spring break trip to Texas. U-M will face Baylor on March 3 and Texas on March 5.
