
Michigan Pushes Past Purdue for Third Straight Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With its lead cut to four points with 3:18 left, the University of Michigan women's basketball team went on a 7-0 run to regain an 11-point lead with 1:29 remaining en route to a 68-61 win over Purdue on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 14) inside Mackey Arena.
With Michigan clinging to a 56-52 lead, senior Madison Ristovski made good on a lefty layup with 2:56 to stop Purdue's 8-0 run. Junior Siera Thompson made a pull-up jumper to beat the shot clock on Michigan's next possession and answered again on U-M's ensuing trip down the floor with a triple from the top of the key, pushing U-M's lead back to 11 (63-52) with 1:29 to go. Michigan made five free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty led the Maize and Blue with 17 points, while freshman Hallie Thome chipped in 14 points before fouling out with five minutes remaining. Thompson had 13 points and eight assists, with Ristovski recording 11 points and four rebounds in 27 minutes. Michigan shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the floor, while holding Purdue to a 39.3 percent (22-for-56).
Thome scored five straight points to open the third for a 40-29 lead just 1:12 into the frame. Purdue answered with back-to-back triples to trim the Michigan lead back to five with 7:04 left. Freshman Boogie Brozoski converted on a back cut for 42-35, Thompson hit a pair of free throws and Flaherty found sophomore Jillian Dunston for 47-37 Michigan lead with 4:34 left in third.
Flaherty found Thome for the layup off a pick and roll for a 52-39 Michigan lead as Purdue called timeout with 1:06 left in the third. Michigan headed to the fourth quarter with a 52-41 lead.
Purdue ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run for an 18-13 lead after Michigan had taken its first lead of the game off a layup from Thome with 2:28 left in the period.
Michigan took its second lead of the game, 25-24, off a transition lefty layup from Flaherty as Purdue called timeout with 2:41 remaining. Senior Kelsey Mitchell scored down low and Thompson followed with a triple from Flaherty with 1:33 left for a 30-26 lead. Purdue answered with a three-pointer on its next possession, but Flaherty did the same with 58 ticks left in the half for a 33-29 U-M advantage.
U-M hit the half with a 35-29 lead after Thome converted on a layup on Michigan's last possession. Flaherty led the way for Michigan with 11 points, with Mitchell going for nine off the bench and Thompson chipping in six points and five assists. U-M hit its last six shots of the period for a 51.9 percent (14-for-27) clip for the half, while holding Purdue to a 40.0 percent (10-for-25) showing. The teams combined for 21 turnovers in the half, with 14 of Purdue's points coming from U-M's 12 miscues.
Michigan completes a two-game road swing on Wednesday (Feb. 17), traveling to Maryland to take on the Terrapins at 7 p.m.
