The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team begins its 2016-17 season with the annual Maize & Blue Intrasquad Saturday (Dec. 10) at 3 p.m. inside Cliff Keen Arena. Admission for the meet is free of charge.
FORMAT
The meet format will consist of a traditional dual-meet format, with 'blast' competition, as both teams will compete simultaneously. A minimum of three student-athletes will compete on each event for both teams.
New this season is a change to the Code of Points, as with every new Olympic cycle, the Men's Gymnastics Code of Points goes under consideration for changes.
In the previous trio of four-year cycles, there were five element groups that gymnasts had to cover on each event with the exception of vault. Each element group consists of different types of skills. An example of two different element groups on one event would be a backward flipping skill on floor as one element group and a forward flipping skill on floor as another element group. Each element group is worth a half of a point for the gymnast.
With the new cycle starting this year, the committee charged with evaluating the Code of Points determined that on each event there was one group with too few skill options for the gymnast to insert into his routine. To create more variety in routines, the committee recommended reducing the number of element groups to four on each event (except vault), distributing the skills from the eliminated group to the remaining groups. By doing, gymnasts have more flexibility in designing routines with a wider number of skill options.
In summary, scoring has also been changed. Starting values for routines on floor, pommel horse, rings, p-bars and high bar will begin .5 lower than last year. Vault starting values will be lowered by .5 tenths, due to changes in vault start values differing by .4 tenths with each half twist.
