
Blue Secures Win over Maize in Annual Intrasquad

» Marty Strech (vault, parallel bars) and Emyre Cole (vault and high bar) each won two individual event titles, while two Mack Lasker (pommel horse) and Thomas Paul (still rings) won individual event titles during their debut.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team debuted eight true freshmen, while sophomore Emyre Cole claimed victories in the all-around, as well as on vault and horizontal bar. Paced by event wins on floor, pommel horse, still rings and high bar, the Blue squad reigned victorious over White, 242.450-236.550, on Saturday (Dec. 10) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
On floor, senior captain Tristian Perez-Rivera scored a 13.90 on his first floor routine to lead the Blue squad and earn an event title. Freshman Mack Lasker, one of the top pommel horse competitors in the country, got off to a strong start with a 13.50 on pommels. After one rotation, Blue led Maize, 40.65-39.35.
Junior/sophomore Marty Strech stuck his dismount on floor, while senior captain Adam Dean captured a 13.40 finish for Maize, but Blue retained the lead 80.05-78.35 in the second rotation after freshman Justin Murphy's 13.30 performance on pommel horse.
After the third rotation, Maize stole the lead from Blue (120.80-119.65) after a strong showing on vault. Stretch paced the Maize squad with a 14.60 Kasamatsu full to earn an event title, while freshman Thomas Paul led the Blue team with a 13.50 first-place finish on rings, earning a first event title for himself.
With a score of 161.70-157.45, Blue regained the lead after the fourth rotation as Cole nailed a 14.60 Yurchenko to share the vault event title with Strech.
During the fifth rotation, sophomore Uche Eke capped his parallel bar routine off with a stuck double pike back dismount to bolster the Blue squad's lead, 242.45-236.55. Strech registered a 13.45, while Dean earned a 13.30 on horizontal bar to help the Maize team.
In the final rotation, sophomore Justin Hopgood, along with Cole, split the horizontal bar event title, securing the Blue team's victory with a pair of 13.90s.
Michigan returns to action as the regular season begins at the Windy City Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. CST from UIC Pavilion in Chicago.
