ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On a day when it honored its 2016 season class, the University of Michigan men's soccer team held even with the No. 1 Maryland Terrapins for nearly 109 minutes but eventually succumbed to the Big Ten regular-season champs, 3-2 in double overtime, Sunday (Oct. 30) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

Evan Louro
Michigan got on the board early with its second-fastest goal of the season just 6:32 into the match. Sophomore Francis Atuahene took a shot that was blocked and deflected cleanly to classmate Robbie Mertz, who collected the ball in traffic and tapped home the loose ball lower left from 10 yards out for the early 1-0 advantage.
The Wolverines continued to pour it on for the next 12 minutes of action and were once again rewarded for its offensive fortitude. Atuahene, the maestro of first goal, was at the center of the second, playing a ball from the center of the park to the right wing that found a darting freshman Jack Hallahan, who sent in a bender that tucked just inside the left post as U-M doubled its delight with the 2-0 advantage.
With the 2-0 lead going into the half, the powerhouse Terps continued to press forward with the Big Ten regular-season title already locked up. Following a disputable penalty-kick goal from the Big Ten's leading scorer Gordon Wild in the 65th minute, Wolverine junior goalkeeper Evan Louro made numerous acrobatic stops, highlighted by a show-stopping, point-blank save off the foot of Miles Pines from five yards out.
However, Maryland equalized with only 1:01 to go in regulation as George Campbell slipped a low cross inside the area that was finished by Chris Odoi-Atsem to send the match into overtime.
A moment of contention came with four minutes to go in the second overtime, as video replay was used to uphold a Terp no goal that Louro made a miraculous, one-arm save on his back stop. However, Maryland's Suli Dainkeh marked the match-winner minutes later at the 108:59 and achieved the 3-2 win over the Wolverines
With the Big Ten Tournament on tap, U-M, the No. 8 seed, will take on the No. 9 seed Rutgers Scarlet Knights Saturday (Nov. 5, 1 p.m.) in College Park, Maryland. If victorious, U-M will advance to once again meet the Terrapins, the No. 1 overall seed, in the quarterfinal round on Sunday (Nov. 6) at 4 p.m. on BTN.
