ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team hosted its annual Maize & Blue Intrasquad dual on Sunday (Oct. 30) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Maize used several bonus wins, including back-to-back pins, to claim the exhibition, 25-16.
While most weights saw preliminary matches held at the Bahna Wrestling Center last Thursday, the series at 157 and 165 pounds were held in entirety at the intrasquad, with senior captain Brian Murphy and sophomore/freshman Logan Massa claiming both of their respective matches,
Murphy, ranked fourth in the preseason InterMat poll, edged senior/junior Jordan Amine, 4-3 and 4-1, at the former weight. He used a late reversal and rideout to overcome a three-point deficit in the first match and a quick first-period takedowns and 2:47 riding-time advantage to lead throughout in the second.
Massa, ranked eighth, earned bonus points in both of his bouts against senior/junior Aaron Calderon, scoring eight takedowns, two back points and 4:10 riding time to claim the first contest, 20-7, before using eight takedowns and six back points to secure a 23-8 technical fall in the second.
Massa was one of four redshirt freshmen to sweep their wrestle-off series, joining Austin Assad, Stevan Micic and Sal Profaci at the lowerweights.
Assad finished on five takedowns, including two apiece in the second and third periods, and rode for 2:25 to defeat sophomore/freshman Mike Volyanyuk, 12-3, at 125 pounds.
Micic, ranked eighth nationally, scored a second-period fall against freshman K.J. Suitor at 133 pounds. He led 12-1 at the time, earning big points on a four-point cradle in the first, before working a leg turk for the pin at the 3:48 mark.
Profaci also pinned in the subsequent match at 141 pounds, stacking senior/junior George Fisher in an overtime scramble to get the call with just a second remaining, at 7:59. Fisher scored on a first-period single leg to lead early in the bout and held 2:38 riding-time advantage, but Profaci evened the score with a takedown at the third-period buzzer to force the sudden victory frame.
Junior/sophomore Zac Hall used a late takedown to ice a 5-2 decision against junior/sophomore Malik Amine at 149 pounds. He held a narrow lead after a pair of escapes and a point for an Amine technical violation, and after failing to convert on several leg attacks, finished a single leg in the waning moments of the third.
Senior captain Domenic Abounader cruised to a 14-3 major decision against senior/junior Ernest Battaglia at 184 pounds, scoring on five takedowns, including two apiece in the first and second periods, with two back points and 3:35 riding-time advantage.
The heavyweight series was the only to split as sophomore/freshman Kostya Golobokov used a second-period takedown to defeat sophomore/freshman Ty Wildmo, 4-1, and force a rubber match -- which will be contested at a later date. After a scoreless first period, Golobokov finished on a late single leg in the second and rode out the period before adding an escape and stall point in the third.
Due to some nagging injuries, wrestle-offs at 174 and 197 pounds were postponed, while some wrestlers unable to compete today will also have an opportunity to wrestle off at a later date.
Michigan will send the bulk of its roster to participate in the Eastern Michigan Open next Saturday (Nov. 5) at the EMU Convocation Center, while Murphy will compete in the 157-pound contest at the NWCA All-Star Classic that evening in Cleveland, Ohio. The Wolverines will kick off the dual-meet portion of their 2016-17 schedule on Friday, Nov. 11, hosting Virginia at 7 p.m. at Keen Arena.
