KEY LARGO, Fla. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team concluded its annual training trip with a first-place finish at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic, held Sunday (Jan. 3) at the Jacobs Aquatic Center. The Wolverines scored 231 points to win the four-team event which consisted of mainly sprint, short-course meters races, finishing ahead of Air Force (187), George Mason (82) and Colorado College (14).
Michigan got event wins from seven different swimmers on Sunday. The team's best event on the afternoon came in a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-meter IM, led by junior Chris Klein (2:05.48). Klein also took second in the 50-meter breaststroke (28.53) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:02.25). Junior Jason Chen, who took second behind Klein in the 200-meter IM, also won the 100-meter freestyle (49.92).
Graduate student Kyle Dudzinski took first in the 100-meter backstroke (55.02), with sophomore Aaron Whitaker coming in second (55.25). They swapped places in the 50-meter backstroke later in the meet, with Whitaker winning (25.71) and Dudzinski taking second (25.96).
Other victors included sophomore Paul Powers in the 50-meter freestyle (a meet-record time of 22.19), junior Vinny Tafuto in the 100-meter butterfly (54.68) and fifth-year senior Jeremy Raisky in the 50-meter butterfly (24.41). Those three, along with junior Colin Eaton, combined to lead Michigan to a win in the 200-meter freestyle relay at the close of the meet (1:31.55).
The Wolverines will be back in action in two weeks, facing Georgia Tech, Duke and Indiana in a combined men's and women's quad meet on Saturday, Jan. 16, in Atlanta, Georgia. The meet will begin at 11 a.m.
