ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Ronit Yurovsky propelled the No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over No. 23 Kentucky in the championship match of the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-off Weekend held Sunday (Jan. 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines won the doubles point and the top three singles matches to gain the victory and advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
In doubles, Yurovsky and sophomore Alex Najarian started things for the Wolverines, posting a 6-2 victory over Morgan Chumney and Akvile Parazinskaite at No. 2. Seconds after the conclusion of the match at No. 2, freshman Brienne Minor and sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook secured the double point with a 6-2 victory at the top spot. The match at No. 3 was abandoned with Kentucky leading 4-3 since Michigan tallied the team point.
Kentucky earned the first two points of singles, winning matches at No. 4 and No. 5, to grab a 2-1 advantage in the overall scoring. The Wolverines picked up a 6-2, 6-3 victory by Minor at No. 2 to regain the lead, but that was offset by a Wildcats win at No. 6. Freshman Kate Fahey won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, over Nadia Ravita to set up the deciding match at No. 1.
After winning the opening set 6-0, Yurovsky battled with Aldila Sutjiadi in a back-and-forth second set that ended with a tie-breaker. After falling behind early in the tie-breaker, Yurovsky won the final five points in the tie-breaker to secure the victory.
U-M will return to action next Sunday (Jan. 31), hosting Ohio State in a non-conference match at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will begin promptly at 1 p.m., so fans are encouraged to arrive on time. Admission is free.
