
Michigan Dominates Doubles on Second Day of Home Event

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team continued its strong play at the 2016 Michigan Invitational held at the Varsity Tennis Center, winning six of the seven doubles matches and five of eight singles matches on Sunday (Jan. 17). The Wolverines swept North Florida in doubles and captured three of four doubles matches against Tennessee prior to winning five of the eight singles matches against No. 23 Georgia Tech.
Michigan started the day hot and made quick work of North Florida in doubles, winning all three matches. The Wolverines posted 6-1 scores in two of the matches and won 6-2 in the other contest.
In the doubles matchup with Tennessee, Michigan took three of four matches to post six victories in seven matches on the day. The team of freshman Brienne Minor and sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook used 13 minutes to post a 6-0 victory over Tennessee's Ashley Bongart and Mary Caroline Meredith. Minor and Ruder-Hook finished the day with a 2-0 mark as did their teammates, junior Ronit Yurovsky and sophomore Alex Najarian, with 6-1 and 6-4 victories.
The matchup of top-25 teams in singles lived up to its billing as Michigan and Georgia Tech battled at each of the eight matches. The Wolverines received straight-set victories from freshman Kate Fahey (6-4, 6-3) and Teona Velehorschi (6-3, 6-3) and junior Sarah Remynse (6-1, 6-3), while the Yellow Jackets won a pair of 6-4, 6-4 matches and a 7-6, 6-4 contest from Johnnise Renaud over 17th-ranked Yurovsky.
Michigan won the final two singles matches on the court, a pair of three-set affairs. Minor fought back from an opening-set loss to post an impressive 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Paige Hourigan. Sophomore Alex Najarian lost the first set in a tiebreaker, 12-10, but rallied to defeat Megan Kurey, 6-7(10), 6-4, 7-6(4). With their three-set comeback victories, Minor and Najarian tallied 3-0 marks on the day.
The Michigan Invitational concludes tomorrow (Monday, Jan. 18). Georgia Tech and North Florida will play singles at 9:30 a.m. followed by singles action between Michigan and Tennessee at 1 p.m.
