ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Junior Erin Finn of the ninth-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Wednesday (Sept. 23).
Finn earned the honor after leading U-M to a team victory at Vanderbilt's Commodore Classic last Saturday (Sept. 19), the top-finishing Wolverine in a 39-point effort. The 5K race produced a new career best for the West Bloomfield, Michigan, native, who clocked 16:43.4 and beat the field by nearly 19 full seconds.
She was the best in a field that featured 244 athletes from 21 different schools, including Big Ten foe Ohio State and the hosting No. 22-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores.
This week's award gives Finn the conference honor for the third time in her career. In fact, it falls on the one-year anniversary of the first time she won the award. She was given the conference's weekly recognition on back-to-back occasions last fall (Sept. 23; Sept. 30).
Finn has earned Michigan's first Big Ten honor of the season and the program's most recent since junior/sophomore Jaimie Phelan won it in 2014 (Oct. 28).
