WOLVERINE BITES
With four fall events and four spring, Michigan will play a balanced eight-event regular-season schedule before heading into the postseason. The Wolverines highlight the fall with the season opener at Charleston's Cougar Classic (Sept. 13-15) as well as heading to Madison, Wisconsin, for the East & West Match Play Challenge at University Ridge (Sept. 20-22). Once again the spring opens with a trip to the Lady Puerto Rico Classic (Feb. 14-16). The regular season closes at the prestigious Bryan National Collegiate (April 1-3) in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the Bryan Park Golf Course. Playing at a neutral site for the fifth straight year, the Wolverines play the Big Ten Championships at the Fort Golf Course in Indianapolis, Indiana, prior to the NCAA postseason. [ Schedule ]
Entering her final season, Catherine Peters is coming off a career-best season when she posted career bests for scoring average (76.76), single-round score (71) and 54-hole tournament total (222) and led U-M with a 4-2 match-play record. This summer, she won the collegiate qualifier to earn an exemption to play in the LPGA's Meijer Classic. She has 21 starts in her 25 career events. She also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors this past year, and she is enrolled in two schools at U-M -- the School of Kinesiology and School of Education -- pursuing a physical education degree.
Michigan added a pair of Europeans golfers during the early November signing period with the additions of Elodie Van Dievoet (Brussels, Belgium) and Maria Alzueta Garcia (Vigo, Spain). Van Dievoet will make her Wolverine debut starting her first collegiate event at the Cougar Classic.
This summer, Catherine Peters was given an exemption to compete in the LPGA's Meijer Classic at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She earned a spot in the LPGA event after winning the collegiate qualifier. Despite not making the cut, Peters enjoyed the professional playing experience. [ Full Coverage ]
A LOOK AT LAST YEAR
Michigan recorded six top-10 finishes, with a season-best fifth-place finish twice -- opening the season at the Mary Fossum Invitational and closing the season at the Big Ten Championships. Grace Choi led U-M in scoring for the second straight season with a 75.65 per-round average, while Megan Kim was just behind at 76.04. Overall for the season, Michigan averaged 303.04 per round, which is the third lowest of all-time.
With its closing fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, Michigan posted its ninth top-five finish at the conference championship and first since 2008. U-M's 882 total at the Big Ten Tournament set a new U-M record for 54-hole score at the Big Ten Championships. It is eight shots better than the 900 (305-294-301) tallied at the 2012 conference tournament. The Wolverines first-round 291 tally is the lowest team round total all-time, three shots better than the 294 tallied in the second round of the 2012 conference event.
With the change to match play to determine the NCAA champions at the national championship, Michigan competed in two match-play style events. The Wolverines hosted the East & West Match Play Challenge (Sept. 20-22) at Radrick Farms Golf Course before competing in SDSU's Farms Invitational (March 23-25). Records in match play were Catherine Peters (4-2), Megan Kim (3-3), Grace Choi (3-3), Emily White (3-3), Julia Montgomery (1-1), Lauren Grogan (1-1) and Kathy Lim (0-5-1).
Kathy Lim was the only Wolverine to start all 10 events last year and averaged 76.88 per round. She posted a career-best 224, 54-hole tournament total at the Big Ten Championships (April 24-26). She posted a career-best round of 72, twice in the second round of the Hurricane Invitational and in the first round of the Wildcat Invitational.
LAST TIME OUT
With two Wolverines finishing among the top 20 individually -- Megan Kim (t-13th) and Grace Choi (t-18th), Michigan posted an 882 team total to finish fifth at the Big Ten Championships at the Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis, Indiana. Overall, it marked just the ninth time in program history the Wolverines closed the conference tournament among the top five. Overall, U-M had four players finish among the top 30, and the Maize and Blue's 882 total was U-M's lowest 54-hole total at the Big Ten tournament. [ Recap ]
