KAZAN, Russia -- Former University of Michigan men's swimmer Sean Ryan (2011-14) qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio on Monday (July 27) after he finished fourth in the open water 10K at the 2015 FINA World Championships.
Per FINA regulations, the top 10 men and top 10 women in each 10K race at the 2015 World Championships will earn an Olympic qualifying spot. Ryan finished one spot shy of medal position at 1:50:03.3, trailing only fellow countryman Jordan Wilimovsky (1:49:48.2), The Netherlands' Ferry Weertman (1:50:00.3) and Greece's Spyridon Gianniotis (1:50:00.7), respectively.
Ryan will be the 82nd student-athlete or coach from the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving program to compete at an Olympic Games. U-M has sent at least one student-athlete or coach to 17 consecutive Olympic Games, a streak that began at the 1948 Games in London. With Ryan's berth, that streak stretches to 18.
Ryan becomes only the fourth U.S. athlete in any sport to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. The U.S. Olympic Trials will take place June 26-July 3, 2016, in Omaha, Nebraska.
