ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former Wolverine gymnast Sam Mikulak (2011-14), under the guidance of current U-M head coach Kurt Golder, took home a team gold medal for the United States for the first time since 1995 at the 2015 Pan Am Games on Saturday (July 11). Mikulak, who led Team USA in the all-around during team competition (89.850), then captured the individual all-around gold medal Monday (July 13), becoming the first U.S. gymnast to take home Pan Am gold since 1987.
In the all-around finals, Mikulak marked an 89.650, which was just .050 ahead of Cuba's Manrique Larduet's 89.600 total. Jossimar Calvo Moreno of Colombia took the bronze with an 89.400 total.
Mikulak began on floor, where he marked a 14.850 and had a small hiccup on pommel horse before scoring a 14.250 after recovering. He regained momentum in the third rotation on still rings, where he nearly stuck his double-double dismount and scored 15.000 to take the lead for good.
On vault, he marked a 14.950 from his Kasamatsu one-and-a-half and followed with an electric 15.800 that featured a front flip directly into a Moy with a Stutz to a double front finish. He then closed the historic day with a 14.800 on high bar.
Team finals on Saturday saw Team USA tally a 267.750 for its first gold in the competition since 1995, while Brazil took second with a 264.050 in front of a 259.300 from Columbia. Mikulak also qualified for individual event finals on floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar. The finals for both floor and pommel horse commence on Tuesday (July 14) at 1:30 p.m., while high bar and parallel bar finals take place Wednesday (July 15) beginning at 2:40 p.m.
Additionally, current Wolverine and rising junior Tristian Perez-Rivera represented Puerto Rico, which took seventh as a team with a 246.950. Competing on five events, his best tally came on vault, where he marked a 14.65 in his lone day of competition.
