ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Incoming freshman Kate Fahey of the University of Michigan women's tennis team was selected as the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Senior Athlete of the Year for girls tennis.
It is the 16th year straight year the NHSCA has honored these achievers in the high school athletic community nationwide. This year's recipients, selected in a total of 20 boys and girls sports, are from 15 different states. Each one of the honorees will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum that will be built in the near future.
Fahey, a native of Rumson, New Jersey, graduates high school as the No. 4-rated recruit in the country according to tennisrecruiting.net. After not competing in high school tennis as a junior, Fahey returned to compete at Rumson-Fair Haven as a senior. She went undefeated in singles action throughout the team season, going 13-0 as Rumson-Fair Haven finished with a 13-5 record. Fahey became the first player in school history to win the singles state title, dropping just one set along the way in the individual tournament to take the crown.
On the national and international stage, she was the 2014 Delray Beach ITF champion and won the back draw at the 2014 Clay Court Championships (G18s). Fahey also reached the doubles quarterfinals at the Clay Court Championships while winning the 2012 and 2013 Crotona Cup doubles titles. She was the New Jersey state singles champion as a senior this fall and was runner-up as a sophomore in 2012. Fahey was the 2012 National Open G18s doubles champion and has multiple G16s and G18s Eastern Sectional Championship wins.
Fahey is the third Wolverine to earn the honor as a high school senior, joining current senior Ronit Yurovsky (2012) and Whitney Taney (2007) as Wolverines to earn the honor.
Fahey is part of the No. 3-ranked recruiting class that will join the Wolverines in the fall for the 2015-16 year.
