WACO, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team saw its record-setting season come to an end Thursday (May 21) as its singles and doubles participants dropped matches at the NCAA Championships at the Hurd Tennis Center.
In singles action, junior Ronit Yurovsky was down 4-0 in the first set before breaking Virginia's Danielle Collins to get on the board at 4-1. The Wolverine did not drop a game the rest of the set, breaking Collins two more times for the 6-4 win. However, Collins took a 6-0 second-set decision to knot the match at one set each to send the players to a third set.
In the third, Collins jumped out to a 3-0 edge. Yurovsky held serve at 3-1 and had several break points in Collins' next service game, but Collins held serve to get to a 4-1 advantage. Yurovsky held serve and then broke Collins to get back on serve at 4-3. At deuce, Collins double faulted to give the ad to Yurovsky, who won the game on the next point as a Collins forehand went long.
Collins answered in next game with a break of Yurovsky, allowing her to head back to serve out the match at 5-3. Yurovsky fought off three match points, but Collins came through on the fourth for a 6-3 set win to wrap up the win.
Yurovsky finishes her junior season with a career-best 34 wins, the fourth-best single-season total in school history.
In doubles action later in the day, senior Emina Bektas and freshman Alex Najarian fell to No. 2 seed Carol Zhao and Taylor Davidson of Stanford, 6-4, 6-2.
In the first set, Michigan went up a break at 4-3, but Stanford responded by winning three straight games to wrap up the first frame. It was much of the same in the second set as the Wolverine pair went up a break early at 2-1, but Zhao and Davidson then ripped off five straight games to take the match.
The doubles match was the last match for Bektas in her illustrious Michigan career. She leaves Michigan ranked No. 1 in singles wins (129), second in doubles wins (119) and first in combined wins (258). She was a three-time All-American and two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Year.
Michigan finished the 2015 season with a 26-4 record, winning the Big Ten championship and Big Ten Tournament title and making the NCAA Sweet 16.
