Bernstein, Bektas Honored by ITA

SKILLMAN, N.J. -- University of Michigan women's tennis senior Emina Bektas earned Midwest Region Senior of the Year honors, and head coach Ronni Bernstein picked up Midwest Region Coach of the Year accolades by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Tuesday (May 12). The duo now advances to the national ballot.
Bernstein earned region coach of the year honors for the third time in her career and the first since winning back-to-back awards in 2010 and 2011. The eighth-year head coach led Michigan to its sixth straight Big Ten championship this season with another 11-0 conference season. The Wolverines also captured the Big Ten Tournament title for the first time since 1997 and have won a program-record 26 matches this season.
Bektas is the first Wolverine in school history to earn the ITA Midwest Senior of the Year honor on the heels of being unanimously named the Big Ten Athlete of the Year this season. Bektas is currently the winningest player in school history with 129 singles wins. This season, she is 33-7 overall in singles action and 23-3 in dual matches. Bektas is currently ranked No. 27 by the ITA in singles and teams with freshman Alex Najarian to form the No. 15-ranked doubles team. In addition to the team tournament, Bektas will also appear in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
Michigan advanced to the NCAA Championship round of 16 for the fifth time in the last six years and will face No. 6 seed Georgia on Friday (May 15) at noon CDT. The remainder of the tournament is taking place at the Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
