U-M Moves Past Purdue in Regular-Season Finale

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team swept the doubles point and won singles matches at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions to close out the regular season with a 4-2 triumph over Purdue on Sunday (April 19) at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
U-M began the match by earning the doubles point for the eighth time this season, posting victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The veteran duo of seniors Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu struck first, notching a quick 8-2 decision over Lucas Dages and Arthur Dobradin at the No. 2 spot. Minutes later, redshirt freshman Alex Knight and freshman Runhao Hua clinched the point from the top spot, posting an 8-4 win over Diego Acosta and Ricky Medinilla.
The Boilermakers won the first singles match off the court at No. 2, but Knight put the Wolverines ahead, 2-1, after defeating Dobradin, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4. Knight has won two of his last three singles matches and owns 12 total singles victories this season including eight dual-match wins.
A Purdue victory at the top of the singles lineup by Acosta over Zhu (6-3, 6-1) tied the dual for a second time, but Michigan countered with victories at No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch its third Big Ten victory of the season.
First, redshirt freshman Davis Crocker moved past Dages, 7-6, 6-4 to give the Wolverines their third point of the match. Shortly thereafter, sophomore Kevin Wong clinched the dual-match victory, rallying from a first-set deficit to earn a 5-7, 6-0, 6-0 decision over Matt Bouggy.
U-M will travel to Champaign, Illinois, for the 2015 Big Ten Championships, which run Thursday through Sunday (April 23-26). U-M opens play Thursday against Penn State at 2 p.m. CDT.
