
Wolverines Clinch Share of Sixth Straight B1G Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up at least a share of its sixth straight Big Ten championship with a 6-1 win at Ohio State on Friday afternoon (April 17) at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
Senior Emina Bektas and freshman Alex Najarian were the first off court in doubles, taking an 8-3 win at No. 1. The Wolverine duo went up a break early at 3-1 and never looked back in the victory.
At No. 3, freshman Mira Ruder-Hook and sophomore Sara Remynse fell in a 4-1 hole before storming back to tie the match at 4-4. The match stayed on serve from there, entering a tiebreaker with a 7-7 tie. Michigan took the breaker, 7-1, to wrap up the match's first point.
Junior Ronit Yurovsky pushed Michigan's lead to 2-0 with a straight-set (6-4, 6-2) win at No. 2. Yurovsky broke late in the first set for the win before jumping out to a 4-2 lead in the second en route to the win.
Remynse followed moments later with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6, staking Michigan a 3-0 lead. Remynse won three of the final four games of the first set to take a 6-4 win. In the second, the sophomore took a 3-0 lead to grab a 6-2 win.
Najarian clinched the win for Michigan, taking a 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (5) win at No. 3. Najarian raced out to a 3-0 lead in the third before winning the set in a tiebreaker, 7-5.
Senior Sarah Lee won her match at No. 4 by retirement as U-M increased its lead to 5-0.
Bektas climbed out of a 2-0 hole in the third en route to a 6-3 third-set win for Michigan's fifth point of the afternoon. The Wolverine senior rebounded from a 6-1 second-set loss and the early third set deficit by winning six of the final seven games of the match for a 6-0 U-M lead.
Ohio State won the final match on court for its lone point of the match to provide the final 6-1 margin.
Michigan wraps up the regular season on Sunday (April 19) at Penn State. The match is slated for 11 a.m.

This is the ninth time in U-M history that a team has won at least six straight Big Ten championships.
Emina Bektas (10-0), Sarah Lee (10-0), Sara Remynse (9-0) and Alex Najarian (10-0) remained undefeated in Big Ten action.
Michigan has won 14 straight matches and has not allowed more than two points to any opponent during the streak. U-M has also won 13-of-14 doubles points during the streak.
With the win, U-M cemented its sixth straight 20-win season. It is the eighth time in program history that the Wolverines have won at least 20 matches in a season.
