LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Four members of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team, as well as undergraduate assistant coach Sam Mikulak, took part in day one of the 2015 Winter Cup Challenge on Thursday (Feb. 19) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Seniors Stacey Ervin and Adrian de los Angeles, freshman Dmitri Belanovski and Mikulak will each be back in action for the final day of competition on Saturday (Feb. 21).
Ervin had the best single-event performance on the night, as he earned a second-place finish on the floor exercise (15.50) following his routine, which included a front double-twist connected to a double front flip. He also placed sixth on the vault with his handspring double front with a 15.10.
Fellow Wolverine de los Angeles finished with a fifth-place effort on the pommel horse (14.90) due to his difficult scissor sequence as well as a clean single pommel sequence. Additionally, he placed seventh on parallel bars with a 14.500 that featured a peach-half mount and peach handstand element, capped off by a double pike dismount.
Belanovski earned a 22nd-place finish in the all-around with a 81.60. His day was highlighted by a 17th-place finish on the floor exercise (14.25) and a 28th-place finish on the still rings with a 13.30.
Senior Nick Hunter competed on three events, highlighted by a 16th-place finish on the pommel horse with a 13.95 and a 17th-place finish on the high bar with a 13.50.
Finally, Mikulak competed in three events, and earned a 13th-place finish on the pommel horse with a 14.15, as well as a 17th-place finish on the parallel bars (14.10).
The final day of competition commences on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 7:15 PST from the Riviera Hotel. Results will determine the members of the 2015 U.S. Senior National Team.
