Tonight's loss extended Michigan's winless streak at Mariucci Arena to four games (0-4-0). Michigan last won at Minnesota on Nov. 28, 2008, a 6-3 victory in the College Hockey Showcase. U-M had won three straight in the series against Minnesota coming into tonight, including a home sweep earlier this season (W, 4-3 OT; W, 7-5) on Jan. 9-10 at Yost Ice Arena.
Junior forward Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves extended his point streak to five games with his third career two-goal game tonight, his first goals since Nov. 29 at RPI. Nieves has nine points (2G, 7A) in that span.
Dylan Larkin extended his point streak to 10 games, recording an assist on Boo Nieves' second-period goal. Larkin has 20 points (8G, 12A) in that span. The last time a Michigan player had a point streak of 10 games or more was Alex Guptill, who had points in 10 straight games from Feb. 9 - Mar. 23, 2013.
For the first time in seven games, the Wolverines failed to score a goal in the first period. Michigan had outscored opponents, 15-6, in the first period over the last six games heading into tonight's contest.
Zach Werenski recorded an assist tonight and now leads all U-M defensemen with 19 points (5G, 14A) on the season Werenski is second among Big Ten defensemen in points, with nearly a point a game (0.83 points/game). Werenski is on pace to near Jack Johnson's scoring record (32 points in 2005-06) for freshman defensemen at Michigan.
Michigan was held to its lowest shot total since Dec. 28 vs. Michigan Tech (21 shots), as the Wolverines were outshot, 34-23, on the night. Michigan came into the game No. 4 in the nation with 35.00 shots per game.
Michigan fell to 4-6-0 in road contests and had a three-game road winning streak snapped with tonight's loss. Tonight was Michigan's first Big Ten road loss of the season.
