ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior linebacker Desmond Morgan of the 17th-ranked University of Michigan football team will be honored with the Scholar Athlete Award for the Michigan Chapter of the National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Football Hall of Fame on Sunday (Dec. 13).
A four-year letterwinner, Morgan has appeared in 49 career games, with 44 starts. He has accumulated a team-leading 296 tackles, making 146 solo stops. Morgan has tallied 16 tackles-for-loss totaling 39 yards, adding nine pass breakups and 3.5 sacks, with a forced and recovered a pair of fumbles in his U-M career as well. Morgan is U-M's active tackling leader, sitting just four tackles shy of the 300-mark. He has the chance to reach that plateau when U-M plays the No. 19-ranked Florida Gators in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day.
Morgan appeared in one game in 2014, registering six tackles against Appalachian State before missing the rest of the season due to injury. In 2013, Morgan started all 13 games and registered 79 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1.0 sack, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Off the field, Morgan is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and has earned multiple Athletic Academic Achievement awards at U-M. Morgan has spent time at local schools volunteering with young students, and he is set to graduate this month with a secondary education major, focusing on social studies.
Morgan will be recognized this Sunday (Dec. 13) at Dearborn Inn in Dearborn, Michigan, at an event held in conjunction with the Detroit Free Press' All-State banquet.
Michigan plays Florida on New Year's Day (Friday, Jan. 1) at 1 p.m. in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl. The game will be played in the Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Florida, and will be televised nationally on ABC.
