COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 6-seeded University of Michigan men's soccer team fell to third-seeded Maryland, 5-2, Sunday (Nov. 8) at Ludwig Field in the opening round of the 2015 Big Ten Tournament. Both of U-M's scores came from seniors in James Murphy (65th minute) and Colin McAtee (88th minute).
The Terrapins opened up the scoring in the 24th minute of play, as defender Chris Odoi-Atsem found space on the right flank. He sent in a ball with his right foot that found the head of a streaking Sebastian Elney, who drove the header into the top left portion of goal for the 1-0 lead.
U-M had its best chance of the half shortly after conceding, as Murphy darted down the left flank and sent a lofted cross inside the six that narrowly missed the leaping header of classmate William Mellors-Blair.
The Terps doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half, as they earned a corner from the left touchline. The initial corner from Tsubasa Endoh was played back to him, and the second service of the sequence resulted in Eryk Williamson driving in a header for the 2-0 lead.
U-M was given the lifeline it needed in the 65th minute, as Murphy drew a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty-kick attempt. The senior calmly buried the chance past Terp goalkeeper Cody Neidermeirer, cutting the Maryland lead in half at 2-1 with nearly 25 minutes to play in the contest.
The two sides then combined for an exciting final 10 minutes of action, as four goals were scored in the span to bring the match to the final resting place of 5-2. The U-M score came from the head of McAtee in the 88th minute, as junior Rylee Woods sent a marvelous cross inside the box that was finished by McAtee to make it a two goal match at the time.
The Wolverines now await its NCAA Tournament fate, with the selection show airing on NCAA.com Monday (Nov. 16) at 1 p.m.
