ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 16-0 spurt over the final 2:47 of the first quarter to pull away from Ferris State in a 109-39 exhibition win on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 8) inside Crisler Center. The Wolverines only allowed 13 points in the second half.
U-M had five double-figure scorers, paced by sophomore Katelynn Flaherty's 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting and a 6-for-7 effort from three-point range. Freshman Hallie Thome put in 20 points on 10-for-12 shooting, and classmate Nicole Munger went for 17 points, five rebounds, five steals and two assists. Senior Madison Ristovski and sophomore Jillian Dunston each chipped in 12 points for the Maize and Blue, which shot 66.7 percent (46-for-69) from the floor in the contest.
Michigan's game-breaking run came after the first quarter media timeout at the 2:47 mark. U-M switched to a full-court pressure defense, spearheaded by Munger, who scored 11 of Michigan's 16 points. Freshman Boogie Brozoski (four) and Ristovski (one) accounted for the other points as U-M took a 37-13 lead after one quarter.
The Wolverines led 59-26 at the break, led by Flaherty's 16 points and Munger's 13 points and three steals off the bench. U-M shot 64 percent (23-for-36) in the half, with all but two Wolverines finding the scoring column in the first 20 minutes.
Thome took over in the third quarter, going for 10 points and two rebounds as Michigan extended its lead. U-M led by as many as 70 points in the contest, taking advantage of 38 fast-break points.
Michigan opens the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 14) at home against Binghamton. Tip is set for noon at Crisler Center. [ Tickets ]
