ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held Xavier to just six second-quarter points to turn an 11-point first quarter lead into a 29-point halftime lead in a dominant 92-54 Michigan win on Thursday night (Nov. 19) at Crisler Center.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty led all scorers with 19 points, while classmate Jillian Dunston collected her first career double-double (10 points, 14 rebounds) in her first career start. The other double-figure scorers were senior Madison Ristovski (13 points), freshman Nicole Munger (12 points) and freshman Hallie Thome (10 points). Junior Siera Thompson filled up the stat sheet with seven points, eight assists and six rebounds.
The Wolverines held the advantage in nearly every statistical category, including rebounds (42-25), assists (21-5) and bench points (33-15). Michigan shot 56 percent from the field and was stingy on defense, holding Xavier to just 35 percent and forcing 19 turnovers.
Ristovski hit a triple to end the first quarter, giving the Maize and Blue a 25-14 lead after the first 10 minutes. Michigan started the second quarter on a 10-3 tear, forcing an early Xavier timeout at the 6:53 mark. The timeout did not deter the Wolverines, as the home team pushed the lead to 20 just a minute later on a Flaherty reverse layup. Michigan's run continued over the whole quarter, as Munger scored seven points in 1:26, and senior Kelsey Mitchell (two) and Ristovski (three) contributed.
U-M hit the break with a 49-20 lead after surrendering just six points in the second quarter. Flaherty paced the Maize and Blue with 14 points, while Ristovski had nine, Thome had eight and Munger chipped in seven. Michigan shot 56.8 percent (21-for-37) from the floor in the half, including a 7-for-9 showing from three-point range. Michigan outrebounded Xavier, 23-8, led by Dunston's eight.
The Wolverines never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 38 points, which accounted for the final margin.
