NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Junior tight end Jake Butt of the 15th-ranked University of Michigan football team was named as the John Mackey Tight End of the Week on Wednesday (Nov. 11) after his career-best performance in Michigan's 49-16 win over Rutgers last weekend (Nov. 7).
Butt brought down four catches for a career-high 102 yards against the Scarlet Knights as U-M set season-highs in passing yards (337), total offense (487 yards) and points (49). On the season, Butt is second among all U-M pass catchers in receptions (31) and receiving yards (418), trailing only senior wide receiver Amara Darboh in both categories. Butt is one of two Big Ten tight ends with 100-yard receiving performances so far this year (Brandon Lingen, Minnesota).
The Pickerington, Ohio, native continues to climb U-M's all-time lists among tight ends in receptions and receiving yards. After Saturday's win over Rutgers, Butt sits at No. 7 in all-time receptions by a tight end (72) and No. 10 in all-time receiving yards by a tight end (864).
Butt, a preseason John Mackey Award Watch List member, is the first U-M tight end to win the Mackey Award's weekly nod since former Wolverine Devin Funchess earned the honor in 2013.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week now concludes for the season as the eight semifinalists will be announced on Monday (Nov. 16).
The John Mackey recipient will be announced on Dec. 9, 2015, and then presented live on Dec. 10, 2015, at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. Other key dates include the announcement of the 2015 Mackey Finalists on Nov. 24, 2015.
U-M returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 14) in Bloomington, Indiana, for a matchup with the Hoosiers. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. EST, and the game will be televised on ABC/ESPN2.
