ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Sophomore Ian Rainey of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week by the conference office on Wednesday (Oct. 7).
A native of Westport, Connecticut, Rainey had a big meet in the team's season opener last Friday (Oct. 2) against Michigan State and Purdue. He won a pair of individual events, taking top honors in both the 200-meter butterfly (2:07.98) and in the 400-meter freestyle (4:05.43), winning the latter event by nearly five seconds. In the 200-meter butterfly, he finished nearly half-a-second faster than Dylan Bosch, the 2014 NCAA champion in the 200-yard butterfly.
Rainey was one of three Michigan swimmers to win two individual events in the meet along with senior Anders Lie Nielsen and sophomore Tristan Sanders.
Michigan returns to official competition on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 when it faces Penn State and Virginia in a men's and women's combined tri-meet at Canham Natatorium. The meet will begin at 11 a.m. both days. Both the men's and women's squads will participate in the annual alumni/intrasquad meet this Saturday (Oct. 10) at 10:30 a.m. Admission is free.
