ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior Colin McAtee scored twice in the first half, while freshman Francis Atuahene marked his team-best seventh goal of the season, as the University of Michigan men's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw with the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday (Oct. 3) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Wisconsin (2-7-1, 1-1-1 B1G) opened the game with the majority of opportunities, nearly scoring in the ninth minute off a corner kick that hit the post. Tom Barlow headed the corner into the left post, but Michigan sophomore keeper Evan Louro was able to trap it just in front of the goal line.
U-W found the first marker of the match at the 14:14 mark, as Mark Segbers found Barlow on the break, and he found the lower right corner to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
Michigan (5-2-2, 2-0-2 B1G), ranked No. 23 by Soccer America, responded quickly, as McAtee headed in a centering pass from Rylee Woods in the 15th minute to tie the game at 1-1. He gave the Wolverines the lead just four minutes later, tapping in a rebound off a spilled long shot by Atuahene in front of the goal mouth.
Atuahene got his chance shortly after the assist and capitalized. The Accra, Ghana, native curved in a shot from the left side to give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead at the 21st minute, giving U-M three goals in nearly six minutes of action.
Wisconsin then countered with two quick goals, one in the closing moments of the first half. U-W's Christopher Mueller took a free kick from 20 yards out, dodged the Michigan wall, and tucked the ball inside the left post to cut the lead to 3-2 heading into halftime. The Badgers' good fortune continued early into the second half as they tied it up in the 47th minute, when Nick Jones collected a loose ball just inside the area and finished lower right to conclude the scoring.
In extra time U-M had several opportunities to clinch the match in both sessions, outshooting Wisconsin 8-0.
Most notably, Woods took a free kick from 40 yards out that was nearly deflected in but was parried by Badger keeper Adrian Remeniuk. Just two minutes later, sophomore Michael Kapitula had a shot deflected out, and on the ensuing corner, a Wisconsin defender blocked a rocket shot from inside 15 yards from the right foot of junior/sophomore Tyler Anderson.
With its unbeaten streak now at four matches, Michigan will return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 7), as the Wolverines travel to take on No. 7 Notre Dame at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast via ESPN3.
