NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Using par to win the second playoff hole, sophomore Emily White claimed her first career medalist honor and guided the University of Michigan women's golf team to a 878 54-hole total and third-place finish today (Sunday, Oct. 11) at Yale's Women's Intercollegiate held at the prestigious Course at Yale.
Heading into the final round four shots back of the individual leaders, White rallied on Nos. 16 and 17, making a pair of up and downs for birdie to post her second career-best 70 (-1) of the event and vault into a tie with Clemson's Lauren Stephenson atop the leaderboard at 211 (-2).
A coin toss win gave Stephenson the honors, and she striped her drive down the center of the fairway. White hooked her tee shot left but punched out to the greenside rough. Stephenson's approach fell short, and she missed her par putt, giving White a chance to counter with a bogey. After missing her up and down from the rough, White was close enough to make bogey and extend the playoff.
White put herself in position after a strong drive and well positioned second shot. She made two putts for par, putting the pressure on Stephenson. After Stephenson missed her approach to the green, she was unable to convert on her 15-foot par putt, giving the victory to White -- U-M's 28th individual title and first under U-M head coach Jan Dowling.
"Coming into today I knew I still had a good shot at the individual title, and I knew that the team could still do well if we put up some good numbers," said White. "I'd been playing well the last two days, my putts just weren't dropping. So I knew that as long as I stayed patient today and kept hitting good shots, everything would work out. And it did.
"It was close on those last three holes. I did a good job getting some clutch up and downs for a couple birdies and then par on the last hole. Coming off 18, I knew it was close, but we didn't realize I was tied for first until we got scorecard sorted out."
"Emily played great all week," said Dowling. "She gave herself plenty of opportunities and played well under pressure in the playoff. But she really earned this win during her final four holes of regulation and making those two birdies. I am really proud of her. She has worked hard. She has made some real nice adjustments to her short game, managing her emotions and playing competitive golf over the last couple of years. We are really, really proud of her as a team and as a coaching staff."
Opening the three-day event with a 294 first-round tally, paced by White's career-best 70 (-1), U-M was third, where it stayed for 54 holes. Aided by an even-par 71 from White in the second round, the Wolverines posted a 298 and stayed in the third position heading into the final round.
With White's second career-best 70 (-1) of the event and 11 total U-M birdies over the final nine holes polarizing final round play, an additional 71 (E) from sophomore Megan Kim, a 72 (+1) from senior Catherine Peters and a 73 (+2) from sophomore Kathy Lim helped U-M post a Sunday-best team total and produce the program's third-lowest team total in history at 286 as the Maize and Blue finished third at 878 -- the third-lowest 54-hole tournament total in U-M history.
"We came into this tournament wanting to win," said Dowling. "We knew we had a great opportunity of a great golf course. After yesterday's round we didn't finish as strong. We talked about resiliency and being okay if you are two or three over par you can have the confidence to make birdies.
"We were really proud of them today. As a team, we had 11 birdies coming down the stretch. That defines resilience. They are putting a lot of heart into their rounds, and it is showing. It's really, really exciting. On top of that, this is the first time we have been in a final pairing as a team. We handled it very, very well, and we know we will get that opportunity again, soon."
With four Wolverines among the top 20 individually, White led U-M for the first time in her career, posting the second-lowest 54-hole individual total in history with a career-best 211 (-2), smashing her prior best by 15 strokes.
Kim followed, tying her career-best 54-hole mark at 220 (73-76-71) as she was ninth -- her second straight top-10 showing. Lim tied for 10th, setting a new career-best 54-hole score at 222 (74-75-73), while Peters tied for 20th at 225 (77-76-72). Junior Grace Choi rounded out the Wolverines starting five, tying for 41st at 231 (77-80-74), while freshman Elodie Van Dievoet tied for 33rd playing as an individual at 229 (81-72-76).
The Wolverines will close their fall season with a trip out west to Boulder City, Nevada, Sunday through Tuesday, Oct. 25-27, for UNLV's Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Boulder Creek Golf Club. It marks the second straight season U-M heads to the Rebels' events after tying for 12th a year ago.
"We have about two weeks before Vegas, and everyone knows what we have to work on," said Dowling. "We are very happy with the result this week, but there is always room for improvement. We are always working hard to get better. That's the beauty of the game of golf. We are excited to see what we can do against these west coast teams to close this fall season."
