Michigan now has a 119-131-15 record against the Gophers all-time and improved to 66-48-7 at home against the Gophers. The Wolverines have won two straight games against Minnesota, recording back-to-back wins in the series for the first time since Nov. 28, 2008 (W, 6-3), and Nov. 29, 2009 (W, 6-0).
Red Berenson recorded his 799th win and needs just one win to become the fourth head coach in Division I men's hockey with 800 victories. He would join a club that includes Jerry York (974 wins), Ron Mason (924 wins) and Jack Parker (897 wins). Berenson moved into fourth place on the NCAA all-time wins list with his 784th career win last season on Feb. 7, a 7-3 win at Penn State. Berenson passed Rick Comley, who had 783 wins at Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan and Michigan State from 1973-2011. Berenson is 799-391-84 (.660) in 31 seasons at Michigan.
The Wolverines won their first overtime game since Nov. 29, 2013, vs. Ohio State (4-3, OT), snapping an 0-5-3 stretch in overtime games dating back to last season. Michigan played its first overtime contest of the 2014-15 season tonight.
Zach Hyman recorded his team-leading seventh multiple-point game of the season with a four-point night (G, 3A) and set a new career high for assists in a game. He leads the team and the Big Ten with 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) this season. Hyman also leads the team with three game-winning goals. He has points in three straight games and seven of his last eight contests.
Michigan's special teams continue to improve as the Wolverines have recorded a power-play goal in five of the last six games after Dylan Larkin's power-play goal tonight. Michigan is 9-for-21 (42.8%) on the PP in that span.
Freshmen Dylan Larkin and Zach Werenski are off to fast starts for the Wolverines. Larkin leads all Big Ten freshmen with 18 points (4G, 14A) on the season after adding a goal and an assist tonight, while Werenski is second among Big Ten freshmen and Big Ten defensemen with 13 points (3G, 10A) after recording an assist. Larkin has points in his last three contests and five of his last six games.
Michigan defensemen have recorded a combined 11 goals in 18 games this season after Cutler Martin's goal tonight. In 2013-14, Michigan defensemen scored eight goals in 35 games. Cutler Martin (3G, 6A), Michael Downing (3G, 6A) and Zach Werenski (3G, 10A) are tied for second among Big Ten defensemen with three goals on the season and are three of the top five scoring defensemen overall in the Big Ten.
Steve Racine made 32 saves to earn his third straight win in net and has stopped 103 of 108 shots (.954 Save %) in three starts since Dec. 28 after a gap of eight games (Nov. 1) in between starts.
