Kornacki Postgame Feature: Larkin Scores at Home of His Future Team
DETROIT, Mich. -- Dylan Larkin scored a power-play goal in the opening period, but Michigan State's Matt DeBlouw broke a 1-1 tie on a deflection at 1:58 of the third period, and the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 13 USA Today/USA Hockey, No. 13 USCHO) fell, 2-1, to Michigan State on Saturday (Jan. 30) in front of a sold-out crowd at Joe Louis Arena.
Michigan State snapped the Wolverines' seven-game winning streak (dating back to Dec. 13), the longest active winning streak in the nation.
Michigan had a late power-play chance in the third period trailing 2-1, as Mackenzie MacEachern was called for hooking at 16:37 of the final frame. However, the Wolverines managed just two shots on goal on the man advantage and could not solve Michigan State goaltender Jake Hildebrand (29 saves) in the final minute of play with the extra attacker on. Michigan finished the night 1-for-3 on the advantage while holding the Spartans scoreless on one power-play chance.
Goaltender Zach Nagelvoort made 26 saves in net in his second consecutive start for the Wolverines.
The Spartans took an early lead on their first shot of the game, capitalizing on a 2-on-1 chance. Joe Cox fed Villiam Haag with a 2-on-1 pass, and Haag fired a shot off the arm of Nagelvoort into the net at 3:09.
The Wolverines answered on their first power-play opportunity of the night later in the period, after a Michigan State too-many-men penalty at 14:53. With time winding down on the man advantage, Zach Hyman corralled a pass from Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves behind the net and fed Larkin in the slot, where he beat Hildebrand over the shoulder at 16:08 to tie the game at 1-1.
Michigan appeared to take a 2-1 lead late in the second period, with the two teams skating 4-on-4. Andrew Copp drove the net and was hooked by MSU's Ron Boyd, drawing a penalty. Copp got a shot on net, then followed with a rebound, poking the puck past Hildebrand. But the play was blown dead before the puck crossed the goal line at 14:26.
U-M could not convert on the ensuing 4-on-3 power play, and the teams remained tied at 1-1 heading into the third period.
Michigan will travel to Chicago next weekend for the Hockey City Classic at Soldier Field, where the Wolverines will take on Michigan State on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 7 p.m. CST in a game that will air on the Big Ten Network.
