ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) had 15 kills and a .609 hitting percentage, and junior Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) led all players with 20 digs as the University of Michigan volleyball team defeated Youngstown State in straight sets in the first game of the Michigan Invitational Friday morning (Sept. 19) inside Crisler Center. Set scores were 25-23, 26-24 and 25-23.
Cole had 15 kills on 23 swings, adding five digs and a pair of blocks. Freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) was Michigan's other player in double figures in kills, garnering 14 terminations. Junior Carly Warner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) had a double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs.
Michigan went on a 5-0 run midway through the first set and held on for the two-point win. Tied at 10, Knop served five straight points with kills from Cole and junior Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and three Penguin errors. Junior Krystalyn Goode's (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) kill gave the Wolverines a 19-16 lead. Youngstown State cut the lead late to 23-22, but Cole and Davis ended the set with terminations.
The Wolverines were up 5-1 in the second set after Cole's kill and built a 14-10 lead on a Knop swing that hit the floor. Youngstown State called timeout at 17-12 after a Penguin error, before Cole's termination put Michigan up 21-16. The Penguins battled back to cut the lead to 23-22 on Lexi Egler's kill, but Knop's kill and service ace gave the Maize and Blue the 2-0 lead.
The third set saw 17 ties and seven lead changes. With the set tied at 19, Youngstown State had an attack error, and junior Lindsey Lerg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) had a service ace to put the home team up 21-19. Knop's back-to-back kills gave Michigan a 23-21 lead. Goode set up match point with a kill at 24-22, and Knop ended it with a termination at 25-23.
The Wolverines hit .264 for the match, including a .289 hitting percentage in the second set. U-M also outdug the Penguins, 53-47.
Michigan continues the tournament tonight (Friday, Sept. 19) with a 7:30 p.m. match against Kansas State in Cliff Keen Arena.
