ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team outshot the Bowling Green Falcons 20-10 on the match and 16-3 in the second half but was unable to overcome a Bowling Green goal in the 17th minute, falling to the Falcons, 1-0, on Tuesday (Sept. 16) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines maintained the vast majority of the pressure in the opening 15 minutes. However, a counter-attacking oriented Bowling Green squad found a pair of opportunities in the early going. The latter chance resulted in a link-up play between Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan that yielded in the lone goal of the match, at the 16:29 mark.
Sullivan collected a ball inside the U-M 18 and sent a flick to Flynn, who finished lower right past freshman Evan Louro (South River, N.J./St. John Vianney), who made five saves on the night, three of which came in the first half.
After being outshot, 7-4, in the opening stanza and trailing 1-0, U-M ramped up the offensive pressure, switching to a more attacking formation that almost paid dividends right out of the gate. Senior/junior Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) sent a cross inside the area that found the head of freshman Ahinga Selemani (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), but the attempt sailed wide of goal.
In the 64th minute, Bowling Green had seemingly its last chance of the match, as Flynn hit a beautiful free kick from 22-yards out that was tipped over the bar by Louro to preserve the 1-0 scoreline.
Over the final 20 minutes of action, U-M outshot the Falcons, 10-1, but the Wolverines were unable to find the equalizer. U-M's last chance of the match came in the 87th minute of play, as junior William Mellors-Blair (Nottingham, England/Georgia St.) sent a low cross to Selemani, but the volley was turned away by goalie Nick Landsberger.
U-M returns to Big Ten action Sunday (Sept. 21) vs. the Northwestern Wildcats at 4 p.m. from Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill.
