GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team recorded top-three finishes in the only two races and sit in first after first day of the AT&T Winter National Championships on Wednesday (Dec. 3) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Both relays picked up NCAA 'B' times. The 800-yard freestyle relay team looked a little different with junior and relay regular Anders Nielsen in Doha, Qatar, for the FINA Short Course World Championships, yet the quartet of Dylan Bosch, Jack Mangan, Justin Glanda and Julian Ballestas finished second (6:23.31). The Wolverines were actually behind after the first leg (-0.27) but regained the lead in the second (+1.90) and expanded on it during the third (+2.64). However, Ballestas could not hold the lead and was out-touched at the wall by Louisville's Matthias Lindenbauer.
In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Peter Brumm -- a Cornelius, North Carolina, native -- Richard Funk, Jeremy Raisky and Bruno Ortiz took third (1:26.30). Ortiz split 19.22 down the final 50 yards to hold off Ohio State for a place on the podium.
The Wolverines will be back in action tomorrow (Thursday, Dec. 4) for the second day of the AT&T Winter National Championships in Greensboro. Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m., with event finals starting at 5 p.m.
