ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan wrestling head coach Joe McFarland announced Friday (Nov. 7) that fifth-year senior Max Huntley and sophomore Adam Coon have been named team captains for the 2014-15 season. The announcement was made in conjunction with the upcoming Maize & Blue Intrasquad, scheduled for Sunday (Nov. 9) at 2 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
Huntley will serve as captain for the second straight season. A two-time NCAA qualifier at 197 pounds (2012, '13), Huntley has overcome two season-ending injuries over his collegiate career. He moved down to 184 pounds last season before it was cut short in December. Back at 197 pounds this year, he claimed third place at last weekend's MSU Open, posting a 4-1 record with two pins and a major decision, in his first competition since the injury.
Coon is just the second sophomore captain in Wolverine program history and the first since Zac Stevens in 2009-10. Michigan's wins leader last season with a 32-5 record, Coon was ranked the nation's No. 1 heavyweight at multiple points over his rookie campaign after earning seven wins over top-10 opposition. Over the summer, he captured bronze medalists in both styles at the Junior World Championships.
Michigan will officially open its season at the EMU Duals on Saturday, Nov. 15, squaring off against Ohio (11:30 a.m.) and Edinboro (1 p.m.) at Bowen Field House.
