Maize and Blue Puts Away Indiana in Five Sets in Home Finale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Abby Cole matched her career high with 24 kills, and senior Lexi Dannemiller, playing her final career match at home, registered a double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs as the University of Michigan volleyball team won a five-set thriller Wednesday night (Nov. 26) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-8, 24-26, 25-13, 20-25 and 15-11.

Cole added eight blocks in the victory. Dannemiller was joined by freshman Adeja Lambert, who had 13 kills and 12 digs for her double-double. Freshman Caroline Knop added 13 kills and nine digs, while juniors Tiffany Morales and Lindsey Lerg had 16 and 13 digs, respectively.
Michigan opened the fifth set with two straight points and led 4-1 after a Knop kill. Indiana closed the gap to 5-4, but the Maize and Blue scored three of the next four points, taking an 8-5 lead on a Lambert kill at the changeover. Knop's kill put the Wolverines up 11-8, and it was 13-10 off a termination from Cole. Freshman Claire Kieffer-Wright closed out the match with a kill as Michigan picked up its second five-set victory of the year.
The Wolverines hit a torrid .650 and rolled to a first-set win. Cole had five kills in the set while Indiana hit -.120 which included nine errors. A Dannemiller kill made it 12-4, while a Cole termination put Michigan up 18-6. Cole's kill gave Michigan a 22-7 advantage. Lambert closed out the set with a kill at 25-8.
The Maize and Blue raced out to a 10-4 lead in set two after Knop's solo block. Michigan led 18-12 on a Hoosier error but Indiana battled back to tie the set at 19 after Amelia Anderson's kill. U-M called timeout and then scored the next four points to get to set point. Indiana, with the serve of Awele Nwaeze, earned the final seven points of the set for the comeback win.
The Wolverines came back to hit .500 in set three in another rout (25-13). Knop's service ace put Michigan up 7-2 and it was 16-9 on her termination. Cole had kills at 22-10 and 23-11 and junior Krystalyn Goode and Lambert ended the set with back-to-back kills. Cole had six kills in the fourth set but the Wolverines led just once (5-4) as Indiana forced the decider. Michigan got to 21-18 late, but the Hoosiers ended the set by scoring the final three points.
In the match, the Wolverines hit .277 compared to .118 for Indiana. Michigan outdug Indiana, 65-48, and had 11 team blocks. Knop had two of U-M's four service aces.
Michigan wraps up the 2014 season this Saturday (Nov. 29) at No. 11 Illinois. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST in Champaign, Ill.
NOTES
• Michigan wins a five-set match for the second time this season. The Wolverines defeated Duke in five sets on Sept. 5. The Wolverines gain revenge from Indiana winning in five sets on Sept. 27.
• Michigan ends the 2014 home schedule with a 9-6 record in Ann Arbor.
• Sophomore Abby Cole tied her career high with 24 kills. She also had 24 kills against the Hoosiers on Sept. 27, 2014.
• Cole was one block of tying a career high. Cole had eight blocks on the night, and her career high is nine on two occasions.
• Senior Lexi Dannemiller earned her 46th career double-double. Dannemiller had 42 assists and 11 digs vs. the Hoosiers.
• Junior Tiffany Morales led Michigan in digs for the 72nd time in her career. Morales had 16 digs.
• The 25-8 win in the first set tied a season high for largest margin of victory in a set. U-M defeated Stephen F. Austin, 25-8, in the fourth set on Aug. 29.
