Michigan and AIC met this weekend for the first time since AIC became a Division I program in 1998. The Wolverines improved to 18-3-1 all-time against teams currently in Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) and have played at least one AHA opponent in each of the last seven seasons.
The Wolverines completed their third non-conference series sweep at Yost Ice Arena in the last four seasons. (AIC, 2014-15; Michigan Tech, 2013-14; Bentley, 2011-12)
Four different Wolverines recorded multiple-point nights. Travis Lynch notched his first two-goal game and his second two-point night of his career, and Zach Werenski had his first career two-assist night, while Alex Kile and Zach Hyman each had a goal and an assist.
Junior captain Andrew Copp scored tonight and now has goals in three straight games and five points overall (4G, A) in his last three contests. Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves (G, 2A) and Tyler Motte (G, 2A) also have three-game point streaks after notching points in the game. Nieves scored his first goal in 11 games dating back to last season, while Motte added an assist.
Freshman defenseman Sam Piazza recorded his first career point with an assist on Andrew Copp's third-period goal. Freshmen forward Tony Calderone also notched his first career point with an assist on Travis Lynch's first-period goal.
Sophomore goaltender Zach Nagelvoort recorded 21 saves to earn his second straight win in net, stopping all six shots in the third period.
The Wolverines recorded a season-high 46 shots on net in the victory, topping the 40 mark in shots for the second straight night and notching their most shots in a game since March 9, 2013 (50 SOG against Northern Michigan).
Michigan finished the night 2-for-3 on the man advantage, snapping an 0-for-18 drought on the power play dating back to Oct. 25, when the team scored two power-play goals at Boston University. The Wolverines went 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
