Michigan Head Coach Mike Bottom
On what he liked seeing during the first meet of the season ... "We have been working on a lot of techniques and a lot of details. It gives us an understanding of how coachable this team is, how they are putting into competition they things they learn during practice."
On the younger swimmers performed after four weeks of practice ... "When you have a very talented class of freshmen like we have, many of them have been successful doing the things they've been doing. Sometimes you have to convince them that you can help them make changes. They have to set aside some of the old ways that they believed helped them. We saw in this freshmen class the willingness to make the changes in spite of those successful habits from high school. As coaches we know that if they need to make changes to be successful in this venue, that's an exciting thing as a coaching staff to watch them make those changes -- that shows they trust us. Once we've set that standard of trust, then we can move forward."
On the advantage of starting on the road ... "In a lot of places you can't do what we did, step on a plane and fly directly to Iowa City. We didn't miss classes on Thursday and we had two days of competition. Michigan has supplied that opportunity for us and we really are thankful and grateful that Michigan would do that for us."
On who stood out during the season-opening meet ... "Our freshmen were fun to watch. A guy like Tristan Sanders wins the 200 back, Aaron Whitaker showed some real skill in the 100 butterfly after making some mistakes in the 100 back. Vinny Tafuto was a nice surprise as he did as close to season-best times today as he was all of last year -- we were pretty excited about that. Then you have your leaders like Justin Glanda and Richard Funk step up."
On new diving coach Mike Hilde's first meet ... "I thought it was fun watching Mike operate with the divers for the first time. His enthusiasm and the way he communicates is refreshing -- to watch the divers respond was a lot of fun."
