IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won 12 of 14 events -- including a pair from senior Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) and two from junior Dylan Bosch (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College, Sandton) -- on day two of its season-opening dual meet Saturday (Oct. 4) to top Iowa, 173-119, at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
The Wolverines brought a 20-18 lead into today's action from the two scoring events on Friday (Oct. 3) and started pulling away two events in with wins in the 200-yard medley relay and a win in the 200-yard freestyle by Anders Nielsen (Farum, Denmark). U-M's depth shone through during the meet, with senior Justin Glanda (Rochester Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) and sophomore Jack Mangan (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) taking second and third, respectively, behind Nielsen.
The Maize and Blue pulled another 1-2-3 finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Vinny Tafuto (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) outpaced the competition and was followed closely by senior Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) and freshman Paul Powers (Gainesville, Ga./North Hall)
Funk won both breaststrokes, taking the 100 in 54.18 and the 200 in 2:01.08. Bosch claimed the 200-yard butterfly (1:46.88) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.37).
Freshman Aaron Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) came away with his first collegiate win by touching first in the 100-yard butterfly (48.21); his time is a NCAA provisional mark. Funk (100-yard breaststroke), Nielsen (200-yard freestyle), Bosch (200-yard butterfly) and Tafuto (20.08) each secured NCAA provisional times as well.
In the diving well, senior Thomas Jahnke (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) followed up his third-place finish during Friday's three-meter competition with another third-place finish in today's one-meter (294.25).
Michigan will next compete in a co-ed quad meet against Indiana, Louisville and Texas on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25 at Canham Natatorium. Friday's portion of the meet begins at 6 p.m., and both sessions are free to attend.
