COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- On Thursday (Oct. 30), USA Swimming announced its rosters for three major international competitions in 2015, with several former University of Michigan men's swimmers being selected for roster spots.
Former swimmers Connor Jaeger (2011-14) and Tyler Clary (2008-10) were picked for the 2015 FINA World Championships, which will be held Aug. 2-9 in Kazan, Russia. Both Jaeger and Clary won individual national championships during their time at Michigan, and both represented the United States at the 2012 Olympics in London. On the official roster, Jaeger is listed as swimming the 400-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle and 1,500-meter freestyle, while Clary will swim the 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter butterfly and either the 200-meter or 400-meter individual medley.
In addition, recent graduates Sean Ryan (2011-14), Kyle Whitaker (2011-14) and Michael Wynalda (2011-14) will compete at the World University Games, which will be held July 4-11 in Gwangju, South Korea. This is the second trip to the World University Games for all three men, as the trio also swam at the 2013 Games in Kazan. At that meet, Ryan won a gold medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle, while Wynalda won two medals on relays -- silver as part of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay and bronze as part of the 4x100-meter medley relay. Despite graduating, the three swimmers are eligible because the selection procedures outline that current college students or recent graduates can be chosen as long as they are between the ages of 17-23.
The other event was the 2015 Pan American Games (July 14-18 in Toronto), though no current or former men's swimmers were chosen for that meet. A pair of current women's swimmers -- Gillian Ryan and Clara Smiddy -- were picked, however.
