Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's overall effort ... "It just wasn't good enough on our part. I have been preaching about defense and playing better without the puck and getting our goals against down, and obviously that was not a good start. And, we were excited to play at home. We knew that UNH would bring it. They are always a good team, and they showed that tonight. I thought we had a good first period and they had us on our heels after that. And if we go out like that, it seems to bury us a little farther, and we couldn't answer. So, we can sit in here and talk about how we need to score more goals, but I would tell you we need to be stingier defensively, and then the goals will come."
On the difference between the first and second periods, energy-wise ... "I think part of it is mental. When you are sitting on the bench and you watch your teammates struggling and making mistakes and then you go out there and try to solve it yourself. You can't solve it yourself, but what you can do is do what you are good at for your team. And our team has to stick together. It's one game, and it is very disappointing for everyone in that locker room, and we have to be better tomorrow night. I can't sit in here and tell you that it is all X's and O's. It's confidence and execution and a little bit of luck here and there. We had chances to get the game closer earlier in the game, and we couldn't do it. We have to be better tomorrow."
On positive takeaways from the game ... "Well, not a lot. I am glad we scored the late goal, but we needed to score a goal like that earlier in the game to get our team going. I think our team got a taste of what it's going to be like all year. These are good hockey teams, whether we are playing in our conference or not. UNH, they were picked to finish eighth in their conference, and this is a really good hockey team. We have to be better tomorrow."
U-M Senior Zach Hyman
On his assessment of the flow of the game ... "In the first period, I thought we were playing pretty well; we were outshooting them. I thought we were dominating the game in the first, and then that power-play goal happened, and they took it to us in the second."
U-M Junior Andrew Copp
On whether or not UNH's late-first period goal was the big momentum shift for the game ... "I can see why it looks that way, but it shouldn't have been (a big momentum swing). It was a power-play goal late in the period to put us down 1-0, and we've been through that before, but we needed to have a better push back. Our second period needed to be a lot better. It looks like that's where the game shifted, but it shouldn't have been anything big."
On the team's offensive struggles in the second period ... "I think we're playing well; we were playing in their zone, especially in the first period. We were controlling the play for that entire period, and they scored one power-play goal where they got four shots on that scramble. We were playing well and getting it in their end, but our puck possession isn't as good as it needs to be below the goal line. We're too soft on the puck. Our cycle is not working, and we're not getting pucks through to the net, but we've had chances; we just haven't been able to bury them."
On adjustments for tomorrow night ... "They had 13 blocked shots, either in the first or the first and second. Any time that happens, a lot of pucks are getting out of our offensive zone and getting back in our end. Getting pucks through is going to be important tomorrow night. We have tomorrow night. We have to show up and start proving ourselves."
