CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Senior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) and freshman Alex Najarian (Birmingham, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team combined to win the doubles title at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship on Monday (Oct. 20) at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Bektas and Najarian squared off against Notre Dame's Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson in the championship match. Neither side created any distance as the match headed to a tiebreaker at 7-7. In the breaker, Bektas and Najarian fell behind, 6-3, before saving three match points en route to the 8-6 win.
The Wolverine pair, which was the No. 5 seed, knocked off Catherine Parenteau and Aslina Chua of Michigan State, 8-3, in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. In the third round, Bektas and Najarian notched an 8-2 victory over DePaul's Yulia Shupenia and Rebeca Mitrea.
U-M went 2-0 during Sunday's (Oct. 19) action, defeating Ohio State's Gaby DeSantis and Sandy Niehaus (8-1) in the quarterfinals before picking up an 8-1 win over Notre Dame's Ally Miller and Julie Vrabel to cement a spot in the finals.
With the win, Bektas and Najarian have secured a berth for the ITA National Indoor Championships (Nov. 6-9) in Flushing, N.Y.
It was the second straight season that the Wolverines have won the doubles title, as senior Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) and junior Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) combined to win the event last year in Ann Arbor.
Michigan still has three players alive in singles action at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Yurovsky, Lee and Bektas on Monday (Oct. 20) afternoon.
