ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team swept both the singles and doubles titles on the final day of action at the Michigan Invitational on Monday afternoon (Jan. 20) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Junior Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) and sophomore Amy Zhu (Newark , Del./Laurel Springs) won the doubles title with a 3-0 record on the weekend, going 2-0 at No. 2 and 1-0 at No. 1. In today's action, the pair coasted to a 6-1 win over Georgia Tech's Kendal Woodard and Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer for the title.
In singles action against Mississippi, junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) wrapped up a 2-0 weekend at the top spot with a win today over Mississippi's Caroline Rohde-Moe in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
Freshman Sara Remynse (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) completed her perfect singles weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Mississippi's Erin Stephens to push Michigan to 2-1 on the day. Junior Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) hung on for a 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 6, before senior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) rallied for a 0-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) win over No. 67 Mai El Kamash. With Lee dropping her match at the No. 2 position earlier in the afternoon, Bolender's come-from-behind win propelled her to the singles title.
Freshman Annie Wierda (Holland, Mich./Evert Tennis Academy) ran her weekend record to 3-0 with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) triumph over Allie Robins at the No. 7 slot for U-M's final win of the day.
Michigan kicks off the dual-match portion of its schedule this weekend (Sat-Sun., Jan. 25-26) by hosting the ITA Kickoff at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M will begin the weekend against Virginia Tech on Saturday at 11 a.m.
N O T E S
Scoring in doubles today was a regular set to six, not an eight-game pro set like in previous years. This method will be used through the ITA Indoor Championships.
A 10-point super tiebreaker was used instead of a full third set in singles. This scoring method will also be used through the ITA Indoor Championships.
This was Michigan's final tournament action before beginning dual-match play next weekend.
Michigan went 8-3 in doubles action this weekend.
The Wolverines went 17-4 in singles play this weekend.
