ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won three doubles matches against No. 35 Mississippi and seven singles matches against No. 50 South Florida on the first day of competition of the Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 18) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
U-M kicked off the day with a 3-1 mark in doubles, winning at the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions. Highlighting Michigan's doubles wins was senior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) and junior Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels), ranked No. 9, defeating Ole Miss' No. 19-ranked pair of Caroline Rohde-Moe and Marija Milutinovic, 6-2.
Transitioning to singles play, U-M won all but one match on the day. U-M won five matches in straight sets, with Bektas and junior Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) both winning a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set for their respective wins.
The Wolverines continue competition at the Michigan Invitational tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 19), with doubles beginning at 1 p.m. against South Florida.
N O T E S
Scoring in doubles today was a regular set to six, not an eight-game pro set like in previous years. This method will be used through the ITA Indoor Championships.
A 10-point super tiebreaker was used instead of a full third set in singles. This scoring method will also be used through the ITA Indoor Championships.
This is Michigan's final tournament action before beginning dual-match play next weekend.
