HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del mar) became the first University of Michigan men's gymnast in program history to capture an all-around United States championship, winning the event at the 2013 P&G U.S. Championships with a two-day score of 181.40 Sunday (Aug. 18) at the XL Center.
Mikulak led wire to wire over the two-day competition for his first senior national title. In addition to the all-around title (181.40), he took individual event titles on parallel bars (30.90) and high bar (31.35). Following the competition, he, along with Stacey Ervin (Taylor, Mich./Truman) was named to the United States squad for the 2013 World Championships, set for Sept. 25-Oct. 7 in Antwerp, Belgium.
The all-around and parallel bar wins are the first at a U.S. championships event in program history for a U-M gymnast, while Daniel Diaz-Luong won the high bar competition in 2001.
In one year, Mikulak has captured the Big Ten, NCAA and United States all-around titles, the only three all-around events he has entered this season.
Also representing U-M on day two were Ervin and Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan). Ervin took fourth on floor exercise with a two-day score of 31.15 as well as fifth on parallel bars (29.40) while earning an all-around score of 172.50, which was good for 11th overall. De los Angeles took 14th with a 171.30 in all-around action, and he highlighted his weekend with an eighth-place effort of 29.20 on high bar.
"I am just really happy with the results I had this weekend," said Ervin, who was named to the Senior National Team for the first time. "On floor, I didn't go in with high expectations, and I just wanted to hit my set to the best of my ability. On p-bars, I hit a series of clean sets, and although my routine isn't super difficult, it was really clean."
U-M will host the 2014 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships from April 10-12 inside Crisler Center as the squad seeks to defend its 2013 NCAA and Big Ten titles. U-M will play host to NCAAs for the first time since 1971.
