On Friday (Aug. 3) in London, junior Connor Jaeger scored a spot in the 1,500-meter final, qualifying seventh overall in 14:57.56. He will swim for a medal Saturday (Aug. 4) at 2:36 p.m. » Complete Story
Also, former U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps won his 17th Olympic gold medal, in the 100-meter butterfly, with a time of 51.21. Phelps bested Serbia's Milorad Cavic, who is trained by U-M head coach Mike Bottom, by .60 seconds, as Cavic tied for fourth with a time of 51.81.

Meanwhile, former U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps won his 20th Olympic medal and his 16th gold in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 1:54.27. Additionally, Phelps won heat number one of the 100-meter butterfly shortly after his gold with a time of 50.86 and earned the top seed in the finals.
Also in the 100-meter butterfly, Serbia's Milorad Cavic, coached by U-M head coach Mike Bottom, swam a 51.90 in prelims to earn the fifth-fastest time in the race and a spot in lane number three of the second heat. In the semifinals, Cavic notched a 51.66 and the fourth seed in the finals.
Phelps and Cavic will each swim in the 100-meter butterfly final Friday (Aug. 3) at 2:38 p.m.
Barry Murphy of Ireland, coached by U-M assistant coach Mark Hill, swam a 22.76 in heat four of the 50-meter freestyle, to narrowly miss out on a spot in the finals by .46, while Club Wolverine swimmer George Bovell clocked a 21.77, earning the fifth-fastest time in the race, and will swim in lane four of the second heat of semifinals. Finals for the 50-meter freestyle will be swum Friday at 2:45 p.m.

Swimming the 200-meter backstroke, Tyler Clary (2008-10) posted the fastest time in both the prelims (1:56.24) and semifinals (1:54.71) to earn the top seed for Thursday's (Aug. 2) final at 2:46 p.m. EDT. Former Wolverine Derya Buyukuncu (1995-98), competing in the Olympics for a Michigan-record sixth time, also raced in the 200 backstroke and clocked 2:01.68 to win the first heat and place 33rd overall.
Former U-M volunteer assistant Michael Phelps advanced through the preliminary heats and semifinals of the 200-meter individual medley, clocking a 1:57.11 in the semifinals to advance to the race final Thursday (Aug. 2) at 3:16 p.m. EDT as the third seed. In addition, Bradley Ally, coached by U-M assistant Dr. Josh White, took third in heat two of the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:00.85, tying for 22nd overall, and Club Wolverine swimmer Wu Peng finished 30th in the race (2:01.43).

Tyler Clary (2008-10) claimed fifth in the 200m butterfly final, two seconds off pace (1:55.06) of silver-medalist and former U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps (1:53.01), who touched the wall just .05 behind the winner from South Africa, Chad le Clos (1:52.96). Phelps then swam the anchor leg of the gold-medal 4x200m freestyle relay for his Olympic-record 19th career medal. Former Wolverines Charlie Houchin (2007-10) and Davis Tarwater (2003-06) each earned gold medals as part of the relay due to swimming in the qualifying heats.
The 4x200-meter freestyle relay heats featured the Olympic debut for Houchin and Tarwater and the pair helped the United States qualify for the evening's event final with the fastest time during the morning heats. Houchin led off with a 1:48.22 split to give the Americans a slim 0.01-second edge on the field. Swimming the third leg, Tarwater inherited a 0.80-second advantage and stretched it to 2.43 seconds and two body lengths with a 1:47.33 split. With a final time of 7:06.75, the Americans won their heat by 3.75 seconds over Australia and were nearly 2.5 seconds faster than the other heat winner, France (7:09.18). » Complete Story

Former U-M swimmer Tyler Clary (2008-10) qualified for the 200-meter butterfly final with a fifth-place time of 1:54.93 in the semifinals after getting second in qualifying with a 1:54.96 earlier in the day. Additionally, former U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps won his semifinal heat with a 1:55.53 to qualify fourth for the finals after qualifying third with a 1:55.53 in preliminaries this morning. The finals for the race will be held Tuesday (July 31) at 2:47 p.m. EDT. Each will have a chance to continue the streak of swimmers with U-M ties with at least one medal in the event since 1996, as Tom Malchow won silver in 1996 and gold in 2000, while Phelps was won consecutive gold medals in the events in 2004 and 2008.

Former U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps earned his first medal of the 2012 London Olympics, with a silver in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. Phelps, who did not compete in the event prelims, swam the second leg of the race final, clocking a 150-meter split of 1:10.52 and a 200-meter split of 1:35.04. The four-man USA squad, composed of Nathan Adrian, Phelps, Cullen Jones and Ryan Lochte, notched a time of 3:10.38 for second behind France, which took gold in 3:09.93. The silver is the first of Phelps' 17 career Olympic medals, as he now possesses 14 golds, one silver, and two bronzes.
