FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- Using a two-over 74 from senior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and a three-over 75 from sophomore Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team opened the Big Ten Championships by tallying a 305 team total today (Friday, April 27), putting the Wolverines fourth after the first 18 of 54 holes at the French Lick Resort's Donald Ross Course.
Overall the Wolverines are just seven shots out of the lead as Ohio State and Michigan State are tied for first at 298. Illinois is third, one shot ahead of U-M at 304. U-M has four individuals among the top 25, led by Bauer in a tie for sixth, two shots out of the lead.
After a bogey on No. 2, Bauer used her first of three birdies, on the sixth hole, to bring her back to even through nine. A second bogey on 11 and a double bogey on 13 pushed her to three over, but back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15, both par 5s, drew her back to one-over with three to play. A bogey on 16th closed her day at two-over 74.
Lee saw her bogey on the fourth hole erased as her first of four birdies, on the par-5 fifth hole, helped her draw back to even. Her second front-side birdie on the eighth hole helped her make the turn at one-under. Mirroring Bauer, Lee bogeyed the 11th and followed with a double bogey on the 13th before back-to-back birdies on the par-5 14th and 15th holes got her back to even with three to play. A closing bogey and second double put her at three-over 75 and in a tie for 11th place.
Freshmen Linda Luo (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) and Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS) each closed with 78 as they are tied for 25th, while sophomore Chelsea Pezzola (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal Prep) is tied for 35th at 79. All three are playing in their first conference tournament. Sophomore Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood HS) rounded out U-M's first-day scoring with an 86.
Michigan will start the second round of the Big Ten Championships at 9 a.m. on Saturday (April 28) off the No. 1 tee. The Wolverines will be paired with Northwestern and Nebraska.

• Michigan began the Big Ten Championships teeing off the front nine while paired with Northwestern and Illinois.
• Yugene Lee played the four par 5s at three under, posting birdies on Nos. 5, 14 and 15. Meagan Bauer was two under (birdies on Nos. 14 and 15) and Lauren Grogan was one under (birdie on No. 5). As a team, U-M was two under par on the par 5s.
• Meagan Bauer, Yugene Lee and Alyssa Shimel have started all 11 events this season. In fact, Bauer has started her last 33, while Shimel has not missed a start in her two seasons, a string of 23 straight.
• Chelsea Pezzola, Lauren Grogan and Linda Luo are all competing in their first Big Ten Championships.

On the first day of Big Tens ... "We were really able to take advantage of the par 5s today and that was a huge plus for us. Especially, since this season par 5s have not been one of our strengths. We really were able to score well on them today. This is the type of golf course that you need to take advantage of those holes because they are playing so long. We did struggle a little on the par 3s; however, I think that is something the girls are aware of and they will make the proper adjustments for the next two rounds. We learned a lot from the first round and we need to take that and use it to our advantage. A few of the girls are upset with how they finished, but overall, we are still in the hunt and that is what we want to make sure we concentrate on the most. We want to keep playing well to put us into a position do something special here. This golf course is a tough test. The weather is supposed to get a little rainy. So we need to make sure we stay focused and concentrate on what we need to do in order to stay in the hunt."
