ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Alex Vasileff (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) netted a hat trick, while Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Brian Greiner (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) each scored twice, but the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-9 decision to Ohio State in the inaugural Battle at the Big House on Saturday (April 14) at Michigan Stadium.
Emil Weiss made 12 stops in goal and Yealy upped his team-high goal total to 22 this season. Grenier's pair of goals came via the coast-to-coast variety off faceoff victories.
Michigan trailed 6-2 with less than six minutes remaining in the second quarter but scored three of the next four goals to cut Ohio State's lead to 7-5 at halftime. David McCormack (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) and Greiner scored back-to-back goals 11 seconds apart and Vasileff added his second goal of the game with 3:35 left before the half.
Ohio State increased the lead by outscoring Michigan 3-1 in the third quarter, including three straight goals, before Greiner countered with his second goal of the game at 5:49. Willie Steenland (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) ripped in a bounce shot at the 12:19 in the fourth quarter to cut Ohio State's lead to 10-7. Ohio State led by as many as five goals (12-7) in the fourth quarter. Goals by Vasileff and a tic-tac-toe score by Yealy on an assist from freshman Will Meter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) finished the Wolverine scoring.
Ohio State led 35-29 in groundballs and 35-25 in shots. Michigan was 10-of-22 in faceoffs, with Greiner generating two of Michigan's goals following draws. Michigan was 19-of-22 on clears, while Ohio State was 15-of-17.
The Wolverines return to action next Saturday (April 21) at Rutgers. Game time is 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach John Paul
On the atmosphere ... "I thought it was amazing. This is what we were looking for, and this was the purpose of playing a game like this. We wanted to introduce to Michigan fans that might not know lacrosse that well, and today was a great opportunity to do that. Having the band there, as well as the large crowd really energized us today. The crowd was three of four times bigger than what we normally get, and it felt like a bigger game for us."
On scoring nine goals against a solid Ohio State defense ... "We take a lot out of the way we played today. The last three weeks we've played good lacrosse, but close isn't good enough. We've made tremendous strides in every area over the course of the season. Team One is going to lay the foundation, and we want them to put their hard hat on and get back to work, and our leaders have done a great job establishing the culture from day one."
