ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team (342.800) overwhelmed the No. 13 UIC Flames (325.450) on Saturday (March 17) in the final home meet of 2012 at Cliff Keen Arena. Freshman Stacey Ervin (Troy, Mich./Truman) won the floor and vault competition with career highs, while junior Rohan Sebastian (Oklahoma City, Okla./ Bishop McGuinness Catholic) won the all-around with a 84.05, sophomore Alex Bubnov (Fanwood, N.J./ Scotch Plains-Fanwood) took home the rings crown and freshman Michael Strathern (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) placed first on the high bar.

Michigan led off on floor, where Ervin won the first individual title of his career as he nailed his backward pike skill, wowing the home contingent en route to scoring a career-best 15.25 on the exercise. Classmate Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) aided in the 59.30 U-M team score with a 15.05 to mark the third straight meet he has eclipsed the 15 plateau on floor.

U-M took to pommel horse in the second rotation, where sophomore Matt Freeman (Canton, Mich./ Plymouth) paced the Wolverine effort with a 14.00, while classmate Dylan James (Valencia, Calif./ William S. Hart) matched the 14.00 to share third place. In total, the Maize and Blue collected a 55.70 on the event.

Michigan elected to only enter five competitors on rings, an event that the Wolverines took the top four spots in. Bubnov led the Michigan charge with a 14.50, while Sebastian took second with a 14.40. Sophomore Jordan Gaarenstroom (Laguna Hills, Calif./ Halstrom) chipped in a 14.05 to round out the top three finishers for the Wolverines, who scored a 56.75 on the apparatus.

The Wolverines moved to the vault competition in the fourth rotation, where Ervin took his second event title on the night with a 15.20. He was followed by de los Angeles in second with a 14.45 as the Wolverines took the top five spots in the event to claim an event score of 56.20. On parallel bars, freshman Nick Hunter (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) used a 14.40 to take second to lead the U-M squad to a 56.70 on the event.

Leading 287.050-270.850 heading into the final rotation, Michigan closed out the victory on high bar, where U-M claimed the top four spots in the event, as Strathern won the event with a 14.25 as the Wolverines notched a 55.75.

Michigan returns to action Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, as the Wolverines take on the rest of the Big Ten at the 2012 Big Ten Championships, hosted by the University of Iowa.

On the meet ... "We did well on vault again tonight. We only put five guys on rings, and sometimes that puts more pressure on the guys, especially if someone falls. With only having five guys on the event, pressure is on already, and when the first guy falls, it is hard to secure a good team score. We didn't perform well enough on p-bars tonight and our scores could have been worse on that event."

N O T E S

• Sophomore Sam Mikulak was not with the squad for the meet, as he is taking part in the Pacific Rim Championships this weekend in Washington.

• Three of Michigan's seven wins have come this season without Mikulak -- Feb. 18 against SUNY-Brockport and Ohio State.

• Adrian de los Angeles' 15.05 on floor marked the fourth time this season he has scored a 15-plus on the event. His career high (15.35) was set last week against Oklahoma.

• Freshman Nick Hunter returned to the lineup for the first time since competing against Illinois and Oklahoma on Jan. 28, and competed on pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar.

• Matt Freeman equaled a career high with a 14.00 on pommel horse.

• Stacey Ervin won the Newt Loken Award, given to the most exciting gymnast in the meet.
