Wolverines Drop Annual Pink Match to Michigan State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell to Michigan State, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-20, in its annual Pink Match Wednesday night (Oct. 17) at Cliff Keen Arena.

Ally Sabol
Junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) led Michigan with 13 kills, while junior Ally Sabol (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) and sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) led three Wolverines in double figures in digs with 15 apiece. Fifth-year senior Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Prep) had five blocks and Dannemiller added 25 assists.
Michigan had an 8-6 lead in the opening set on an assisted block from McElheny and Dannemiller, but Michigan State used a Lauren Wicinski kill to take a 10-9 advantage. MSU took a 15-11 lead on a Taylor Galloway kill and went up 19-12 on a termination from Amy Dentlinger. Michigan cut the Spartan advantage to 22-19 on a McElheny kill, but the Spartans closed out the set on blocks by Alexis Mathews and Kelsey Kuipers to take the early lead.
Michigan State went up 6-2 in the second set on a block, then took an 8-3 lead on a Dentlinger kill. A kill from junior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) cut the lead to 8-6, but Michigan State used a 6-0 run to take a 16-9 lead that was highlighted by three straight Wicinski kills. MSU went up 22-13 on a service ace and wrapped up the set on a Jazmine White kill. MSU hit .341 in the set.
There were nine ties in the third set as a Cross kill knotted the set at five-all. Michigan State went up 10-7 on a Halle Peterson kill, but two straight Erwin kills helped the Wolverines tie the set at 10. Tied at 13-all, Michigan State scored three straight points on a Dentlinger kill and back-to-back blocks. The Spartans then went up 21-16 on a Wolverine attack error. A Cross kill made it 23-19 MSU, but a Kuipers kill closed out the match at 25-20.
U-M hit .113 for the match, while the Spartans had a .312 hitting percentage. Michigan State had a slight 54-53 advantage on digs and had 11 blocks.
Michigan ends its four-match homestand this Saturday (Oct. 20) against No. 1 Penn State. The match starts at 7 p.m. and is a Maize Out at Cliff Keen Arena.
NOTES
• Michigan wore long-sleeved pink jerseys for its Pink Match. The jerseys were auctioned off to help raise money for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
• Michigan falls to 10-2 on the season in three-set matches.
• Michigan State now leads the overall series 48-36.
• Lexi Dannemiller earned her eighth double-double of the season and 23rd of her career with 25 assists and 15 digs.
• Lexi Erwin led Michigan in kills (13) for the 15th time this year.
• Claire McElheny recorded a season-high five blocks. Her previous high was four on three occasions.
